The Brief
A space as heavy as the music
Greyspace Recordings needed a web presence that could hold the weight of their output — a UK-based electronic label sitting across underground club music, ambient, and experimental sounds. The ask was simple: build something minimal but loaded with atmosphere.
The site needed to feel authoritative without being cold — a digital home that reflected the label's aesthetic without competing with the music itself.
The Approach
Typography-first, atmosphere-led
The design leans into negative space and a tight typographic system. A dark-first palette keeps the focus on the release catalogue, using deliberate contrast and whitespace as tools rather than decoration.
Built entirely by hand in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript — no frameworks — giving complete control over performance, motion, and the fine details that make the difference between a site that feels finished and one that just works.
Palette
Monochromatic dark base — black, near-black, and off-white only. Colour would distract from the release artwork and the label's identity.
Typography
Display type treated as texture. Mono for metadata. Body set looser for readability without losing the editorial tone.
Interaction
Subtle hover states and custom cursor behaviour — enough to reward attention without performing for its own sake.
Performance
Zero dependencies. No frameworks, no build step. Hand-coded for speed and complete control over every interaction.
